Your Fabric, Your Hat: A Bespoke Wedding Creation
Sometimes, the perfect hat begins with a piece of fabric.
A few years ago, I received a message from Ilaria, a bride in Italy who had found a pillbox hat in my collection. She loved the design, but she wanted something special: a hat that would match her wedding dress perfectly.
So we decided to make one using her own fabric.
She eventually sent me a beautiful piece of Italian silk, and the real work began.
Creating a bespoke hat is about much more than matching a color. The fabric needs to be flexible on a bias so it covers the millinery canvas base smoothly. I was delighted with the silk Ilaria sent me. It was luxurious, heavy, beautifully textured and a pleasure to work with. I still keep little pieces just to remember it:)
Throughout the process, I sent her photographs from my workshop. We discussed the details, the gathers, the embellishment and the veil.
The hat was based on one of my existing designs, embellished with Swarovski crystals and finished with a delicate birdcage veil. But this version was made especially for Ilaria, using the fabric from her own wedding dress. When the hat was finally ready, I was delighted with the result.
And recently, when I contacted Ilaria again to ask whether she might have photographs from her wedding, she replied with a message that made me smile:
“Quel cappello era bellissimo.”
“That hat was beautiful.” ❤️
I would love to see how it looked on her wedding day.
Because sometimes, the most special creations begin with an idea, a beautiful piece of fabric and a conversation between two people who want to make something just right.
